Netflix is on something of an action movie hot streak right now thanks to the likes of Rebel Ridge, Hit Man, The Shadow Strays, and more. To the delight of action fans everywhere, the trend continues with the brutal and bloody martial arts epic, Uprising. The historical war movie is now available to stream on the platform, and reactions from both critics and audiences have started to emerge.

Kate Sánchez of But Why Tho? A Geek Community heaps praise on Uprising for standing out “for all the right reasons.”
“The choice of culture, history, and sins in one person’s life and personal connections makes Uprising (2024) more than just another movie in the robust sageuk genre. It stands out for all the right reasons.”
Daniel Hart of Ready Steady Cut awarded the movie a near-perfect 4/5, calling Uprising a “treat” and applauding the movie for not holding back.
“Uprising does not hold back and I am so glad it didn’t. It’s a watch-worthy experience from start to finish. If you love Joseon Dynasty dramas, this is a treat.”
James Marsh of South China Morning Post, meanwhile, teases some “spectacular swordplay” that does not shy away from “bloodletting” and violence.

“Kim delivers a visually polished production, beautifully shot by Ju Sung-lim and boasting some spectacular swordplay that yields a multitude of decapitations and copious bloodletting.”
Diego Batlle Otroscines.com did assert that the movie “lacks subtlety,” but more than makes up for any shortcomings with its “intense fight scenes.” Which, really, is all we needed to hear.
“If the film lacks subtlety, nuance, and psychological depth, it makes up for it with intense fight scenes, colorful hand-to-hand choreography, and some isolated and welcome bursts of humor.”

“Recently watched Uprising on @netflix it has stunning visuals and choreography it touches on topics such as wealth, slavery, inequality between classes and friendship. It is an action packed katana swinging thrill ride but it’s not afraid to get emotional either. 8/10,” declares X/Twitter user @Lets___Review, while @AwosikaTobee adds, “Uprising is CINEMA. Beautiful performances, choreography and visuals, and I love the pacing. It should be seen on the biggest screen possible.”
Finally, action movie fan @DerekBrocks urges others not to miss out saying, “While Tjahjanto's latest martial arts action epic is certainly the crown jewel of badassery this month, don't overlook Sang-man Kim's Korean historical actioner "Uprising" also on Netflix that offers some fantastic set-pieces with gorgeous cinematography and action design ideas.”
